The 1st (annual??) Rothbury Music Festival was a smashing success and a great way for us to celebrate our 4th anniversary and the 4th of July weekend. Zoe and her friend Tracy came from New Haven to hang out as well. There were about 50,000 fans who showed up - and around 90 bands who played. We started out camping with everyone else in the corn fields, but I had trouble sleeping with all the noise/partying going on around...since I couldn't drink myself to sleep! haha
So...after the first night, we headed over to Gail's house (walking distance to the ranch) and camped in her back yard. There, we met some really incredibly fun people who I hope we'll get to see each year at this festival. By hanging out with them, we weaseled our way into the VIP section during the Dave concert and watched the show with the Ranch owners. The VIP section did not get you closer to the stage, but the drinks were better (and cheaper) and the port-a-potty bathrooms were nicer than those at most restaurants (complete with a flush, automatic sinks, air conditioning, and even an attendant to tell you where to go)!
A major focus of the festival was recycling and climate change. There were teams of people picking up after everyone and even people posted at every single set of recycling/compost/landfill cans. The festival also brought in speakers to discuss these issues.
This was my first time going to a large music festival (unless you count Lalapalooza) and I just couldn't get over how nice the crowd was! I didn't see a fight or even an angry gesture the entire time. Hippies are just really nice/mellow people! I can't wait until next year!
Forgot sunscreen on my feet (note: band aid shape white mark)
